The students of 1953 batch MBBS, Trivandrum Medical College, were celebrating the results of their first year MBBS where majorityof them had cleared and gone through.
Towards the end of the party, the warden of ladies hostel came up onstage with a very serious face and started in the most somber tone. "Congrats to all of you. But I am afraid I have good news and bad news." The crowd immediately fell silent. The warden waited till even her breath was audible before she continued, "I'll begin with the sad news. One of the girls in the batch will be leaving the hostel, beginning the next academic session."
There was an audible gasp. Was she expelled?? Why would anyone be expelled from their hostel, that too a girl?? What heinous crime did one of their batch-mates commit??
"And the good news is....." The warden paused a bit, as she couldn't suppress her smile...
Suddenly it struck most of them, especially the ladies. They'd heard that their classmate Uma Devi Antharjanam, heavily pregnant while giving her first MBBS exams, had been taken to hospital with labour pains that very morning.
The loudest cheer of the night was reserved for the last, just after the warden said those last three words.
"It's a boy!!!'
